Mama's Sanctuary by Sweet Sofia is a non-profit mental health & wellness organization in Marion, Iowa — founded in 2025 to carry forward the warmth, safety, and unconditional love of one extraordinary woman.
In Memory & In Mission
She made everyone feel at home.
Barbara "Mama" Hart was born on April 16, 1960 in Vinton, Iowa — and from her very first breath, she was made to love people. She passed away unexpectedly on September 1, 2022, following complications after a hysterectomy, leaving behind a community that will never be the same.
For over 30 years, Mama poured herself into her local elementary school as a volunteer coordinator and classroom paraprofessional. She didn't just support students — she saw them. She taught Sunday School, hosted countless baby showers and bridal showers, and opened her home to anyone who needed a warm meal, a listening ear, or simply a place to belong.
Her recipes are still made and shared to this day. Her laugh is still remembered. Her love is still felt.
Mama's Sanctuary exists because of her — and for everyone who has ever needed the kind of rest and restoration that only comes from being truly, unconditionally loved.
